Overview
This Privacy Policy describes how Crittr AI (“we,” “our,” or “the app”) handles information when you use our iOS application. We designed Crittr AI to be privacy-conscious and to rely on Apple’s platform where possible. This policy is written in plain language; if anything here conflicts with Apple’s terms or applicable law, those requirements apply.
By using Crittr AI, you agree to this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Information We Process
Depending on how you use the app and which features you enable, we may process the following categories of information:
- Photos and camera input that you choose to capture or import for identification.
- Discovery and journal data such as species labels, timestamps, stats, rarity, and collection progress stored on your device.
- App settings and preferences needed for the app to function.
- Apple account and sync data if you enable iCloud, CloudKit, or Game Center features supported by the app.
- Diagnostics such as crash logs or performance data if you or your device settings allow Apple or the developer to receive them.
- Support communications if you contact us by email.
We do not sell your personal information.
Photos and Camera
Crittr AI may request access to your camera and photo library through iOS permission prompts. You control whether to grant or revoke access at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security.
When you submit a photo for identification, the app processes that image to suggest possible wildlife matches. Processing may occur on your device using Apple frameworks where supported. We do not use your photos for advertising, and we do not sell photo content to third parties.
If a future version sends images to a server for analysis, we will update this policy and the in-app disclosures before that behavior is enabled. As of the effective date above, the app is intended to prioritize on-device processing where feasible.
On-Device Data
Much of your Crittr collection—discoveries, journal entries, and related metadata—may be stored locally on your iPhone. Local storage helps the app work quickly and reduces unnecessary data transmission.
Data stored only on your device remains subject to your device security (passcode, Face ID, Touch ID, etc.). If you delete the app or erase your device, local app data may be permanently removed unless you have enabled backup or sync features described below.
iCloud, CloudKit, and Game Center
If you sign in with an Apple ID and enable optional sync or social features, Apple may process and store certain data on your behalf under Apple’s privacy policy and terms:
- iCloud / CloudKit may sync discoveries or app state across your devices linked to the same Apple ID.
- Game Center may process gameplay-related identifiers, achievements, or leaderboards if those features are enabled in the app.
We do not receive your Apple ID password. Apple handles authentication. For details on how Apple processes data, see Apple’s Privacy Policy.
You can disable iCloud or Game Center for Crittr AI in iOS Settings or within the app where options are provided.
Analytics and Diagnostics
We do not operate a separate cross-app advertising analytics network. However, limited technical information may be collected through standard iOS and developer tools, for example:
- Crash reports and stack traces if you opt in to share analytics with developers or if diagnostic collection is enabled on your device.
- Aggregate performance or stability metrics provided by Apple’s developer services.
This information is used to fix bugs, improve stability, and understand how the app performs—not to sell personal data. You can manage analytics sharing in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
Children’s Privacy
Crittr AI is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app or support email, contact us and we will take reasonable steps to delete it.
Data Sharing
We may share information only in limited circumstances:
- Service providers that help us operate the app or website (for example, hosting this support site on GitHub Pages), bound by confidentiality and only as needed.
- Legal requirements if we believe disclosure is required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect rights, safety, or security.
- Business transfers if the app or its assets are transferred in a merger or acquisition, subject to this policy or notice to you.
- With your direction when you choose to share content outside the app (for example, using the iOS share sheet).
We do not sell personal information.
Data Retention
On-device discovery data is retained until you delete it in the app or remove the app from your device. iCloud or Game Center data may persist according to Apple’s retention and your account settings until you delete it or disable sync.
Support emails are retained as long as needed to respond and maintain reasonable records, unless you ask us to delete correspondence where applicable law allows.
Diagnostic data retained by Apple or development tools is governed by those services’ policies and your device settings.

You can:
